ARLINGTON, Texas — College volleyball took center stage at AT&T Stadium as Nebraska, Florida, Penn State and SMU competed in the inaugural Spikes Under the Lights showcase.

The exhibition brought four nationally ranked programs together for three matches under a shortened best-of-three format. No. 1 Nebraska faced No. 17 Florida in the opening semifinal before No. 10 Penn State and No. 11 SMU battled for the second spot in the championship.

By the end of the night, Nebraska had swept both opponents and walked out of Arlington as the inaugural Spikes Under the Lights champion.

Nebraska Holds Off Florida, 2-0

Nebraska opened the night with a 21-19, 21-18 victory over Florida, but the straight-set result didn’t tell the entire story.

Florida challenged the nation’s No. 1 team throughout a match that featured 18 ties and 10 lead changes.

The opening set eventually reached 19-19 before Manaia Ogbechie delivered consecutive kills, giving Nebraska a 21-19 win.

Florida responded by building a 13-10 advantage in the second set, but Nebraska answered with five straight points to regain control.

The Gators made one final push, pulling within 19-18 before Virginia Adriano recorded a kill and Teraya Sigler closed the match with a service ace.

Sigler led Nebraska with six kills, while Adriano and Andi Jackson added five apiece. Jackson and Ogbechie also contributed three blocks each.

Setter Bergen Reilly finished with 19 assists, while Olivia Mauch led Nebraska defensively with nine digs.

Nebraska hit .220 as a team while holding Florida to .169.

Florida’s Logan King delivered one of the strongest individual performances of the match, recording a match-high nine kills while hitting .350 and adding five digs.

Nebraska survived its first test and advanced to the championship.

SMU Outlasts Penn State

The second semifinal was another tightly contested matchup as SMU defeated Penn State 24-22, 21-18.

Neither program could create much separation in the opening set. The battle extended beyond the normal 21-point target before SMU finally secured the 24-22 win.

Penn State continued applying pressure in the second and eventually grabbed a 17-16 advantage.

That’s when Suli Davis helped change the match.

Davis recorded consecutive kills as part of a four-point SMU run that put the Mustangs back in front. With SMU later holding match point at 20-18, Davis delivered the final kill to send the Mustangs into the championship.

Davis finished with a team-high 11 kills while hitting .364.

Favor Anyanwu added five kills, two service aces and two blocks.

SMU finished with 27 kills and a .323 hitting percentage, compared with 26 kills and a .261 percentage for Penn State.

The difference came down to execution. SMU committed just six attacking errors and found the points it needed late in both sets.

The Mustangs’ reward was a championship meeting with the nation’s No. 1 team.

Nebraska Takes Control of the Championship

After Florida pushed Nebraska throughout the opening semifinal, the Huskers left considerably less room for drama against SMU.

Nebraska jumped out to a commanding 12-2 advantage in the first set and never looked back.

SMU managed to cut the deficit to 16-10, but Nebraska quickly shut down the comeback and finished the opening set 21-12.

The Mustangs struggled to generate offense against Nebraska’s defense, recording only four kills and hitting -.087 in the opening set.

SMU started stronger in the second and remained within one at 8-7.

Nebraska responded again.

Kills from Ogbechie, Adriano and Sigler helped the Huskers create separation before another run pushed Nebraska’s advantage to 18-9.

From there, the Huskers closed out a 21-11 victory to secure the championship.

Sigler led Nebraska with seven kills and five digs, giving her 13 kills across the Huskers’ two matches.

Harper Murray added six kills and five digs, while Ogbechie, Jackson and Skyler Pierce contributed three kills each.

Reilly directed Nebraska’s offense with 21 assists, while Mauch finished with a team-high seven digs.

The final team statistics showed just how dominant Nebraska was in the championship.

The Huskers recorded 27 kills while hitting .339, compared with only 10 kills and a .068 hitting percentage for SMU. Nebraska also held a 3-0 advantage in service aces.

Volleyball Takes Center Stage in Arlington

Spikes Under the Lights was about more than the final scores.

The showcase brought four nationally ranked women’s volleyball programs into AT&T Stadium and gave the sport another opportunity to perform on a major national stage.

For Nebraska, the night also provided two very different tests.

Florida forced the Huskers to execute in tight situations, with Nebraska scoring the final two points of both sets.

SMU presented another nationally ranked opponent, but Nebraska controlled the championship from the opening serve.

The Huskers completed the night without dropping a set, defeating Florida 21-19, 21-18 before overpowering SMU 21-12, 21-11.

SMU earned its championship opportunity with a hard-fought victory over Penn State, while

Florida showed it could go point for point with the nation’s top-ranked program.

Four nationally ranked teams entered AT&T Stadium looking to make their mark under the lights.

By the end of the night, No. 1 Nebraska stood alone as the inaugural Spikes Under the Lights champion.
